Best Young Artist Jury Statement

Though a young artist, Ni Youyu has acquired an astonishingly consistent and rich oeuvre, speaking both to a contemporary mind and a traditional sensitivity.

In his work, the artist addresses natural materials, as well as given idioms of art and philosophy, giving them new substance. This work asks to be understood through seeing, feeling and thinking, mirroring the artist’s synchronous interaction between eyes, hands and heart. In this sense, he can be considered within the Chinese tradition of art. Yet both, technique and subject matter also pertain to the present times, recalling the value of the past within the present.

However, the purpose of Ni Youyu’s practices on such a profound transformation of the “technique” is not to obtain a piece of delicate handicraft, but to question the methods of art itself: How do we describe the world? Can art, by replacing the social function of money with an aesthetic description, as in Ni Youyu’s “Money”, make an impact on contemporary times, its rules and regulations? Must not the long-term project “Ruler”, dealing with the difficult relation of individuality and the social contract, be seen as another exemplary of a subtle back and forth between life and art?
