CCAA ART CRITIC AWARD 2015 PROPOSAL OPEN CALL

ABOUT CHINESE CONTEMPORARY ART AWARD CCAA

Chinese Contemporary Art Award (CCAA) was established by Chinese Contemporary Art Award Foundation in 1997. The founder was Dr. Uli Sigg, and the director is Ms. Li Anna Liu. As the most important international and academic award for Chinese contemporary art, CCAA is given annually alternatively to Chinese artists or to art critics who show particular talent in artistic creation and in its critique, in order to encourage their professional development through publications and exhibitions, and to foster a wider public appreciation, domestically and internationally, of what Chinese contemporary art contributes to the contemporary culture of the world and China. As the first professional contemporary art award in China, CCAA has been witnessed the splendid development of Chinese contemporary art.

ABOUT CCAA CHINESE CONTEMPORARY ART CRITIC AWARD

The vibrant Chinese contemporary art scene lacks sufficient independent art criticism. At present, the market is the main arbiter of what is considered good or bad work. The weight of its judgment, based primarily on commercial criteria, stems from a shortage of alternative resources. China currently has neither enough museums willing and able to participate in the discourse through stablecuratorial practice, nor enough self-directed critics determined to educate this rapidly growing audience that is willing to experience—and, in some cases, invest in—progressive visual art.

CCAA initiated the first art critic award in China in 2007, and gives awards every two years. CCAA hopes to address the above-mentioned issues by establishing platforms for the discussion on independent art criticism, further develop the participants of this active field, and encourage the independent and alternative writing on Chinese contemporary art that is difficult to be funded. After all, this is the primary aspect for pushing forward the Chinese artistic creation.
