Positive Practices: Self-organization and Space Reconstruction
Independent non-profit art space refers to a venue that is initiated by individual(s), used for visual arts or performing arts practices, and is not for profit. Most of these venues were founded by artists or independent curators, and are located in apartments, warehouses or laneways, etc. They usually adhere to the founders' artistic visions, to some extent extended the artistic practices of the founders, and played an important and irreplaceable role out of the mainstream art market and official academic institutions. Also, usually as the testing sites and birth places for experimental art, they continuously bring new blood to enable the healthy ecology of the artistic cycle. Fundraising is always an important issue of the non-profit art spaces, yet nowadays, the spaces seems have made various breakthroughs with the help of continued innovation and upgrade of internet technology and communication culture.
As a professional academic institution, since founded in 1998, Chinese Contemporary Art Award (CCAA) has been working continuously on encouraging independent expression, experimental creations, and the development of Chinese contemporary art. Meanwhile, it is the independent non-profit art spaces who share the similar vision that are the practitioners and contributors of the urban culture and the extension of artistic dimension. The 1st Independent Non-profit Art Space Seminar “The Positive Practices: Self-organization and Space Reconstruction” hosted by CCAA, and co-organized by On Space attempts to provide an initial platform for conversations and collaborations among institutions.
Founders of independent non-profit art spaces will respectively give a speech of about 10 min on the founding background, operation method, key project cases of their institutions. Besides, guests and participants are also invited to have a further thematic discussion on topics such as “the value, vision and mission of an independentspace”, “independent art space and reconstruction of urban culture”, “bottlenecks and dilemmas of non-profit spaces”, ”new approaches in the era of Internet”, etc.
